Dinghy Instructor

Chief Dinghy Instructor, Senior Instructor

Job Purpose

The role of the Dinghy Instructor is to assist the Senior Dinghy Instructor in the organisation and delivery of sailing lessons/courses to Club members, individual visitors, or school groups. The Dinghy Instructor will have responsibility for delivering a fun, active and rewarding sailing experience.

This role is a seasonal position: March 2024 – End of May 2024

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide daily dinghy sailing/powerboating instruction in accordance with the National and Youth RYA Sailing schemes.
  • Ensure RYA standards are adhered to at all times.
  • Provide a high level of safety and instruction for guests both on land, and on the water.
  • Partake in additional waterfront responsibilities including safety cover, customer service and shore-based duties.
  • Implement water safety precautions.
  • Assist with daily maintenance and upkeep of the sailing department and its equipment.
  • Support the management team to organise races and regattas (inflating marks, setting courses, providing safety cover, etc).
  • If suitably qualified, run Powerboating courses in accordance with the RYA powerboating scheme.
  • Assist in the rescue and tow of yachts back to their berth in the marina.

Qualifications – essential

  • RYA Dinghy Instructor
  • Powerboat level 2
  • First Aid certificate valid for the duration of the contract
  • Working knowledge of teaching sailing to beginners and experienced sailors, individually or in groups
  • One-two years previous experience as Dinghy Instructor or related position

Qualifications – desirable

  • Experience of Foiling, Multihull, Keelboat, Advanced, start racing and race coach training.
  • RYA Powerboat Instructor
  • RYA Safety Boat

Skills

  • Competent to lead a sailing session.

Communications & Working Relationship

Cruising Instructor

Department:

Sailing

Reports To:

Chief Instructor Cruising

Job Purpose

The Cruising Instructor must be suitably experienced and competent to deal with training, mentoring and compliance, and course delivery, and sufficiently engaged with the operations of the Club to oversee all processes relating to course booking and delivery within the cruising activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team to provide an enjoyable and safe training experience for students following the RYA programme.
  • Deliver company-specific courses as per standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Liaise with Chief Instructor & Centre Manager and report any maintenance problems or damage to the training yachts.
  • Be responsible for the standard of the training yachts throughout the season, including cleaning, inventory monitoring, and maintenance where required.
  • Ensure a high standard of safety for students and staff is maintained at all times.
  • Ensure training yachts are set up to meet RYA requirements.
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times.
  • Perform other duties within your ability as requested by the Chief Instructor or Sailing Manager.

Qualifications/Skills

  • RYA Cruising Instructor with commercial endorsement.
  • RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore with commercial endorsement.
  • Working knowledge of teaching the RYA Scheme.
  • VHF Operators License.
  • Valid first aid certificate.
  • ENG 1 medical.
  • Basic yacht maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation.
  • Ability to be flexible and work as a team member.
  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic.
  • Safety conscious.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently.
