Exclusive Q&A with Golden Globe Race competitor, Abhilash Tomy
On September 4th, decorated former Indian naval officer, Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd.) will set off on a solo circumnavigation of the world, competing in the Golden Globe Race 2022.
Over more than 8 months, he will sail 48,000km around the world without stopping, using only tools available when the race began, in 1968. His will compete with a vessel flying the UAE flag and bearing race number 71 – the year of the founding of the UAE – sponsored by geospatial intelligence company, Bayanat.
In fact, this will be Abhilash’s second attempt at the race. In 2018, while in third place, he was gravely injured during a storm which tore his mast away. For 72 hours he lay, unable to move, before he was rescued by a French fisheries patrol vessel. Three and a half years later, having relearned to walk, Abhilash is competing again.
Join us for our next Membership Night, at 7pm on Monday 29th August when we’ll connect with Abhilash in Les Sables d’Olonne, where the race will start, to hear more about his incredible career, story and how he is preparing for this next super feat.
