DOSC offers a Dinghy Scheme, a good introduction for new sailers as you will learn quickly how every movement you make and how the tweaking you do affects the movement of the boat.  This kind of sailing is often more accessible for sailors immediately post-certification.

The DOSC Cruising Scheme teaches you how to handle bigger boat sailing and is ideal for those who want to crew and skipper bigger boats, and to charter their own yacht.

RYA JUNIOR DINGHY COURSES

This one day session allows kids to have time on the water to decide if sailing is something they are interested in.

The first course in the Youth Sailing Scheme will build confidence in dinghies, by covering the basic aspects of sailing. 

Young sailors can expect to learn how to steer, control the sail, tacking, and some background knowledge including parts of the boat.

This course builds on the skills learnt in Stage 1, refining the tack and introducing sailing towards and away from the wind. 

Further background knowledge is developed, covering topics such as rules of the road, ropework, and parts of the sail.

Upwind and downwind skills are further developed, so sailors can sail in any direction they choose confidently. Simple maneuvers are introduced to refine boat control. More detailed sailing theory is also covered. 

Upon completion of this course, sailors are allowed to rent single handed dinghies to sail when they wish to.

The final course in the Youth Sailing Scheme wraps up the introduction to sailing by bringing all the previous skills across to double handed dinghies. The theory is more in depth at this level to fully understand how to stay safe on the water.

weekly after school courses

This is the first step to sailing for children, they will discover a basic understanding of how a boat sails, and will cover launching and recovery, steering, handling and parts of the boat. 

Ability after course: Able to steer and understand basic principles

RYA Stage 1 courses are taught in RS Zests.

Course Prerequisites:  Children with no prior sailing experience should participate in a one- day taster session prior to signing up for this course.

The RYA stage 3 course is the final youth course before children are able to sail by themselves. Here they will learn about rigging, launching and sailing in any direction.

Ability after course: On successful completion, children should be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions. They can also pick up a mooring and come along side.

These after school sailing sessions are aimed at post RYA Stage 3 sailors,  building specific skills and techniques both on and off the water whilst increasing experience and confidence. These sessions enable your young sailor to get afloat, make new friends and have fun whilst learning new skills. Sessions consist of briefings and debriefs, mini races and boat handling exercises as well as initiation into racing.

Once your young sailor has competently mastered the skills in the improver sessions, the next step would be the racer sessions. Here we will be focusing on developing basic racing skills and experience in preparation for joining our DOSC Race Squad.

The syllabus includes, preparing for a race, boat setup, starting, tactics/strategy, boat handling around the race course and rule awareness/compliance.

Friday race training sessions are by invite only. The sessions aim to progress and polish racing skills with a varied syllabus of all the different skills required to race at a high level. Ultimately, our goal is to raise peak performance, progress racing skills and encourage participants to take part in both National and International racing events.

This course provides a short introduction to sailing for novices. By the end of the course you will have a basic understanding of dinghy handling techniques and background knowledge.  

It is recommended that all participants consolidate this short introduction with the Basic Skills and Better Sailing courses.

Expand your knowledge and boat handling skills with more advanced techniques and in depth theory sessions.

The ideal course before First Flights, this training teaches how to sail the Waszp, which will maximize success on your first time aiming to get onto the foil!

Power Boat Courses

This two day course provides the skills and background knowledge required to drive a powerboat. It includes close quarters handling, planing maneuvers, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside as well as man overboard recovery and collision regulations.

Minimum Age: 12. Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate

RYA Cruising Courses

An introductory course to sailing a yacht for complete beginners. 

By the end of this two day course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, rope work and be aware of safety on board.  

Holders of the Start Yachting certificate can do a 3 day top up to obtain the full Competent Crew certificate, enroll in the Essential Navigation and Seamanship course and join the Wednesday Night Pursuit Race.

This course is for those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. 

Experience living on board and really get to know the boat. Virtually all the course is hands on. You are the crew – without you the sails won’t go up and the boat won’t be steered. By the end of the course, you will be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all, the day to day duties on board. 

Competent Crew holders can go on to Short Courses and Day Skipper Theory.

Advanced training for more experienced skippers. This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills. 

This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams. 

The course is taught over 40 hours with three exam papers.

Advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night. Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations. 

Coastal Skippers should be able to undertake more difficult passages by day and night and handle the yacht in more demanding conditions. 

Course Pre-requisites:  
15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours, Yachtmaster Theory certificate. 

Duration: 5 days

Ability after course: Confidently handle a boat up to 15m LOA on a costal passage day or night.

If you want to become a more confident yacht cruiser and prefer to learn in all-female environment, this is a great option for you.  
With an experienced, qualified female instructor, our Yacht Cruising class are suitable for beginners and more experienced sailors alike.  

Our four-hour long class is a fun environment to learn and/or hone your skills. You will learn/ practice taking the helm, hoisting the sails, planning a course, trimming the sails, tacking and gybing, berthing, anchoring, making knots and setting up mooring lines.

Introduction to Performance 

Want to go faster, stand on the side of the boat, and fly a spinnaker? This course will teach you exactly that! An introduction to a more technical but exhilarating side of sailing, how to rig and use spinnakers, safely using a trapeze, and sailing a more powerful boat will all be covered. 

Course Prerequisites:  RYA Stage 4 or RYA Level 3

Ability after the course: Can sail a dinghy fitted with spinnaker and trapeze safely.

The pre charter course is aimed at those about to head off for a yacht charter. You will get a brush up on boat handling skills as well as looking into documentation and boat checks.

In a medical emergency a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers. It fulfills the requirements for: 

  • Professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven, including Boatmasters. 
  • RYA instructors. 
  • First Aid certificate needed by offshore racers subject to ISAF’s regulations on first aid training

A course for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. 

The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required for the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on vessels voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.
