Optimist Race Coach

Job Description

4. Job Purpose

Dubai Offshore Sailing Club is looking for an experienced Optimist Racing Team Coach to lead and develop our Optimist Racing Team. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and capable of coaching youth sailors to national and international performance standards.

DOSC currently has sailors competing in the Gold Fleet at the Optimist World Championship and achieving top 5 results at the Asian Optimist Championship. We are seeking a coach who can build on this strong foundation and continue to elevate the performance of our racing programme.

Applicants must have a strong background in Optimist coaching. Additional experience in ILCA, 29er, or other high performance pathways is considered an advantage. Fluency in English is required. RYA qualifications are desirable but not essential.

5. Contract Duration

  • Initial period: 23rd March to end of May
  • Expected continuation: September to end of May (new sailing season)
  • This role is expected to continue into future seasons, subject to performance and programme requirements.

6. Job Responsibilities

  • Lead, structure, and deliver a high performance Optimist racing programme.
  • Coach sailors across advanced and elite racing levels, focusing on race strategy, boat handling, and performance development.
  • Teach safety, sailing theory, and advanced racing techniques.
  • Develop and follow structured lesson plans, including dry land sessions and on water drills.
  • Adapt coaching methods to individual sailor needs and performance goals.
  • Demonstrate excellent organisation, communication, and team management skills.
  • Assist the Racing and Events Manager in the revision and implementation of racing curriculums and programme materials.

7. Regattas

  • Assist the Racing Manager with regattas.
  • Assist parents with planning process, including reminders, directions, regatta details, and other requirements.
  • Act responsibly and manage operational issues appropriately, particularly when DOSC assets and member boats are involved.
  • Submit regatta report forms.

8. Qualifications and Requirements

  • Proven experience coaching top level Optimist sailors.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and structure a high performance racing programme.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid knowledge of race management and regatta environments.
  • Strong background in dinghy sailing.
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 or equivalent.
  • RYA Race Coach or equivalent.

Preferred

  • Experience coaching 29er sailors.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.

9. Communications and Working Relationship

Internal

Ability to work well with management and staff at all levels.

External

Ambassador for the club always in promoting the facility, networking and relationship building in the local and international communities.
