Why a sea captain gifted Ernest Hemingway a polydactyl cat in the 1930’s
You might wonder what on earth this cat looked like (and no, it’s not a sailing type of cat) this was in fact the fluffy feline type which had extra toes caused by a genetically inherited trait called polydactylism. Because of their extra toes, they were top-notch mousers, climbing faster and higher than regular felines. In fact, these kitties were highly sought after because many sailors believed they were also able to maintain better balance on the high seas. Back to Hemingway, he apparently collected polydactyls at his home in Key West, the ancestors of which still roam the Hemingway Home estate in Key West today.
Here at DOSC we have yet to spot a polydactyl but if you do, please let the DOSC Paws team know! We do however have a crew of adorable cats and some are looking for new homes. If you are considering adopting a furry feline friend and would like to support the DOSC led initiative known as ‘DOSC Paws’ please get in touch with Linda +971 52 519 5726.
