Sailability relies upon a team of dedicated volunteers to achieve its goal to give people of determination the opportunity to learn to sail.
Sailability volunteers come from all walks of life, range in age from 16 to 60+ and represent many different nationalities. While we always appreciate help from experienced sailors who are qualified to skipper and drive a powerboat, we also welcome less experienced sailors. The key qualities we are always looking for are people who are friendly, patient and cheerful – and, of course, feel as passionately as we do about Sailability and the incredible value that learning to sail brings to our students.
Sailability sessions are held every Wednesday morning (8:30am – 12:30pm) and every Thursday (8:30am – 5:45pm) during school term times. Depending on how much time a volunteer has to spare, they can choose to help with either one, two, three or all four sessions of Sailability’s weekly sailing sessions.
At the start of each half-term period, we ask our volunteers to confirm their availability. We appreciate that this may be subject to change as the term progresses; all we ask is that you let us know as soon as possible in advance of each session if you’re not able to attend.
While it is beneficial for both volunteers and students if they can attend on a regular basis, we understand this isn’t possible for everyone. So, even if you have an unpredictable work pattern or variable commitments, it’s not a barrier to becoming a Sailability volunteer. Just let us know as soon as you can when you’re available – we can always do with an extra pair of hands!
Sailability volunteers perform a range of different tasks, including:
